The main problem discussed in the paper is how to lengthen the time distances of the completely square-conservative explicit difference schemes. To improve such schemes the authors present the so-called characteristic direction method based on the usage of the characteristic directions of the evolutionary equations, and introduce its fundamental principle on the basis of a one-dimensional evolutionary equation.
