The author studies the problem: to what extent can we simplify mappings between manifolds? He studies this for simple stable mappings (for definition, see the original paper) from closed simply connected 4- manifolds into the plane. He finds some relations between the number of the connected components of the set of singular points of \(f\) and the second Betti number of the source manifold. He also gets more information about this problem.
