Modular lattices with a cover-preserving embedding into partition lattices may not contain projective planes nor projective lines of order greater than 2 as sublattices. For such lattices, the description in terms of the ordered partial linear space of join irreducibles is turned into an effective tool for structural analysis, and necessary resp. sufficient conditions for embeddability are given which come close to a characterization.
