Akemann's criterion of weak compactness in the predual of a von Neumann algebra (denoted \({\mathcal M}_ *\)) is improved. Then it is shown that a non-reflexive subspace of \({\mathcal M}_ *\) contains a subspace isomorphic to \(\ell_ 1\) which is complemented in \({\mathcal M}_ *\).
