The author presents two parameters connected to the influence of the defects on the macroscopic response of the material: one is the value of the macroscopic elastic strain produced by microscopic defects in the material, and the other is the value of the strain energy trapped there. These parameters provide two different measures of the amount of defects in the material. Based on the thermodynamic analysis of the micromechanics of the materials, it is shown that the parameters are simply related to the elastic limits of the materials.
