The authors develop an analytical Green's function technique to study the propagation of Rayleigh waves across a composite wave barrier inserted between two laterally homogeneous quarter spaces. This mathematical model has application in the design of wave barriers to isolate structures and machine foundations from ground-transmitted vibrations. Numerical studies using this technique show that an appropriately designed composite barrier can significantly improve the screening effectiveness from single layer barriers.
