The author considers the regularization method applied to the numerical identification of the diffusion coefficient a(x) within a linear two- point boundary value problem of 2nd order. For solving the corresponding regularized discrete nonlinear minimization problems the Gauss-Newton method is analyzed. The author describes an effective way for performing one iteration step which requires to solve only two tridiagonal systems of equations.
