The purpose of this paper is to determine explicitly the number of Galois extensions of a given algebraic function field of one variable over \({\mathbb{C}}\) satisfying certain ramification conditions with \(SL_ 2(F_ p)\) as their Galois groups. We do this by reducing the computation to that of the number of \(GL_ 2(F_ p)\)-equivalence classes of ordered systems of generators of \(SL_ 2(F_ p)\).
