    The author discusses the finite element method for \(-d^ 2u/dx^ 2=f,\quad 0<x<L\) based on Galerkin formulation and consisting of three nodes with limitation on positioning of the interior node within the element. This derivation is the basis of quarter node isoparametric elements used in fracture mechanics.
