The paper is based on a model by \textit{S. Fishman} and \textit{R. Marcus} [J. Math. Biol. 21, 149-158 (1984; Zbl 0548.92015)] for an infectious plant disease spreading in an orchard of citrus trees planted in rows. The infection is controlled by inspection and subsequent removal of infected plants. Rules are formulated for judging the efficacy of the control. The number of inspections it takes before the rules apply are found by a computer experiment. The study assumes no further infection from outside after the epidemic has started as well as both isotropy and homogeneity with respect to the spread of the epidemic between the rows.
