Is is proved that conformal gauge fixing can be imposed on simply connected parts of world sheets in Minkowski space. This is done by reducing the problem to solving a pair of equations for characteristics and checking that they possess solutions. The proof uses a variant of the Picard-Lindelöf theorem and a suitable redefinition of coordinates.
