The author considers functionals in which the first variable is a locally strictly monotone proper Fredholm operator of index zero. With certain assumptions it is shown that the problem of determining stable local minima of the functional is equivalent to the problem of finding solutions of the Euler equation in the region of positive second variation. Illustrating examples are given.
