A technically plausible stability theory of general shells is outlined. A set of compact vector equations are derived. Shear deformation and local rotations are taken into account. As an example the governing classical equations for cylindrical shells are found by suppressing local rotations. No numerical results are given, which could show the importance of the additional terms.
