The author analyzes the problem of a plane circular elastic inclusion embedded in an unbounded elastic matrix and subjected to remote equibiaxial loading. This problem can describe the complexity of cavity nucleation phenomena and the cavity formation at an inhomogeneity. A set of interfacial integral equations and their approximations as a finite set of nonlinear algebraic equations is derived. The author discusses the influence of interface characteristics in general (and interfacial shear in particular) on the bifurcation of equilibrium separation at the inclusion-matrix interface.
