The paper deals with a fully nonlinear weakly hyperbolic equation in one space dimension with a time and spatial degeneracy. In the particular quasilinear case it can be noncharacteristicly parabolic degenerating only on the initial data support. A local existence theorem in Sobolev spaces for the Cauchy problem with classical initial data is proved.
