The author considers the symbol \(S_i\) to be the sum of the distinct products of the first \(n\) natural numbers taken \(i\) at a time, for \(2\leq i\leq n-1\). He then defines an arithmetical function using the \(S_i\) and derives some combinatorial identities for them.
