Consider a quasihomogeneous Gorenstein surface singularity, which is not log-canonical. Consider the maximal reductive subgroup of this singularity modulo the nonzero complex numbers. In this paper the author bounds the order of this group by a purely topological invariant of the singularity. As a corollary the author proves the classical result of Hurwitz on the order of the automorphism group of a smooth projective curve of genus at least two.
