A modified principle of iterative prox-regularization is presented for solving elliptic variational inequalities with weakly coercive operators. The new methods are illustrated by two examples: (i) a contact problem of two elastic bodies without friction and (ii) a contact problem of an elastic body with a given slip stress. Strong convergence of approximate (finite element) solutions is proved.
