This is a special issue on the occasion of the ICM 98 in Berlin, with an Interview with Friedrich Hirzebruch (first EMS President), presentations of the new Journal of the European Mathematical Society (JEMS) to be published by Springer, the Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung (DMV), Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO), Zentralblatt MATH database, and the MATHPREprint Server System.
