The author discussed the concepts of ``deviation'' (Umweg), ``abbreviation'' (Abkürzung) and ``dead end'' (Sackgasse) as models in the historiography of mathematics. He pointed out that the use of these concepts presupposes the establishing of a definite aim or a determined direction, or of a ``normal'' way of the development of mathematics. By some examples he demonstrated how considerations which seem to be a dead end can become the beginning of a new theory.
