The authors study theoretically and numerically the problem of reducing the number of particles in the stochastic weighted particle method for the Boltzmann equation. Theoretical estimates for the error in the bounded Lipschitz metric and in the Sobolev space \(H^{-2}\) are obtained. The results are illustrated numerically for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation.
