The author extends the concept of multiresolution schemes introduced by \textit{A. Harten} [Adaptive multiresolution schemes for shock computations, J. Comput. Phys. 115, No. 2, 319-338 (1994)] to a categorial setting. Within this more general framework a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of the concept is obtained. Examples of generalized multiresolution schemes including presheaves over Abelian groups and the canonical examples as Galerkin method, multigrid, stationary subdivision schemes and multiwavelets are presented.
