Given four generating functions \(F_1(q,Q)\), \(F_2(q,p)\), \(F_3(p,P)\) and \(F_4(p,Q)\) for a mechanical system with canonical variables \((q,p)\) and \((Q,P)\), the authors prove that they are related by a group of matrices of eight elements. The similarities with thermodynamics are exhibited.
