This is a short report (without proofs) on a result of the author and \textit{K. W. Johnson} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 27, No. 2, 243-245 (1992; Zbl 0816.20010)], showing that the \(1\)-, \(2\)-, and \(3\)-characters are sufficient to determine a finite group up to isomorphism, and also on related recent results. In addition there is a remark on constructivity in the modular group case.
