By using the energy principle and Galerkin method, the authors obtain approximate analytical solutions which describe flexural and torsional buckling loads for a thin-walled box column with variable cross-section. Concrete numerical examples are given in order to verify the accuracy of the results obtained, and a comparison is made with exact solutions for a uniform bar (a special case of the problem discussed).
