The author has completely rewritten the first edition (Universitext, Springer, New York) (1990; Zbl 0701.12001), covering more material and giving more details in proofs. Solvability by radicals now appears later, after the fundamental theorem of Galois theory. These changes should make the book an even more useful introduction to the basics of Galois theory.
