Summary: This study aims at the unsteady flow analysis of complex pipe systems by using the method of characteristics. Sudden closure and opening of devices such as valves and pumps causes the occurrence of unsteady flow. However, to our knowledge, hydraulic analysis of pipe systems is still performed only for steady-state flows. The unsteady flow analysis can be done by using methodology developed in this paper.
