The author presents a boundary-integral method for transmission problems for the Helmholtz equation on polygonal domains in the plane. The integral equation is solved by a Galerkin method using a multiscale basis. Efficient and reliable a posteriori error estimates are derived, and they are used in an adaptive quadrature scheme.
