Point, higher, and nonlocal symmetries of the special form (known as potential symmetries) are calculated for the equation \[ u_{xx}+\left(\frac{1}{u^n}\right)_{tt}=0,\quad n\neq -1. \] These symmetries are used to calculate explicit solutions of this equation and to reduce the equation to a system of linear PDEs.
