In the paper the conditions are discussed which influence the morphological stability of crystals. The normal and layerwise mechanisms of the crystal growth are the basis of the model of crystal growth developed by the authors. The proposed model approximates an ``automatic'' transition from one mechanism to the other. No concrete examples are considered.
