Let \(W^r_q\) be the Sobolev space of functions \(f(x)\equiv f(x_1,\dots,x_l)\) defined on the unit cube in \(\mathbb{R}^\ell\). Approximation of \(f\in W^r_q\) by bilinear forms that are pairwise products of functions of fewer variables is studied.
