The author proves several results on submeasures on the set of positive integers. As a consequence he obtains a generalization of a result of \textit{T. Brown} and \textit{A. Freedman} [C. R. Math. R. Acad., Sci., Soc. R. Can. 12, No. 1, 1-6 (1990; Zbl 0701.11011)], which has lost in importance by Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.
