The Cauchy problem for a porous medium equation with strong absorption is considered. It is shown that under some assumptions the support of \(u(\cdot,t)\) is bounded for \(t>0\) even if the support of the initial function is the whole space. Sharp local estimates (as \(t\to 0\)) for the boundaries of the support are established.
