This is a continuation of the earlier work of the two authors with \textit{V. Šverák} [Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci., IV. Ser. 25, 713-730 (1997; MR 2000c:58030)]. In the earlier work, by considering the time-independent case, it was shown that a weakly convergent family of harmonic maps on a periodic lattice accumulates at a harmonic map on the 2-torus \({\mathbb R}^2/{\mathbb Z}^2\) as the mesh-size of the lattice approaches zero. In the sequel, the authors find a new proof of the existence theorem which the two authors proved in an even earlier paper [\textit{St. Müller} and \textit{M. Struwe}, Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal. 7, No. 2, 245-259 (1996; Zbl 0896.35086)].
