Henrique Manuel de Figueiredo (1861-1922) and his work at the University of Coimbra are described. In his two papers on Riemann surfaces and on plane algebraic curves he used the methods of Riemann, although he had been trained in the French tradition. General remarks on the slow process of diffusion of mathematical ideas from leading to peripheral mathematical communities. Figueiredo was an exception to the rule.
