This paper proposes a moving-mesh, finite-element method for time-dependent partial differential equations using unstructured grids on domains in the plane. A similar method using structured grids was earlier given by two of the authors [\textit{W. Huang} and \textit{R. D. Russell}, Moving mesh strategy based upon a gradient flow equation for two-dimensional problems, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. (to appear)]. Several examples are given, illustrating both the advantages and the limitations of the method.
