The author draws mainly on three logicians of the 15th and early 16th centuries -- Dominicus Soto, Judocus Clichtoveus and the author of ``Hagenau Commentary'' and also by implication some earlier ones. The ``basic categoricals'' are characterised in the beginning of this paper. An account of the Buridanian analysis of basic categoricals are given next. Next, based on this analysis, the author shows how logicians distinguished between what belongs to the ``matter'' and what belongs to the ``form'' of a basic categorical. The author then introduces the notion of ``wide scope signs'' which a basic categorical contains as part of its form. Lastly this notion is used in the rules whereby both a quality and a multiple quantity is assigned to a basic categorical.
