A mixed finite element method is described for a third order partial differential equation. The method can be applied, for example, to the solution of the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation for unidirectional propagation of long waves in some nonlinear dispersive systems. A time-continuous numerical method is described and error estimates for its solution are demonstrated. A superconvergence estimate is proved for the auxiliary variable used in the mixed formulation.
