We review difficulties associated with using the filtering in groundwater flow models, and identify procedures that would facilitate its more effective and convenient use. First, we present a mathematical statement of the linear filter and explain significant mathematical aspects of the linearized filter. Then some major studies on the use of filtering theory in groundwater modelling are reviewed, and their strengths and weaknesses are identified. The concluding section consists of a summary of problems and prospects in applying the filtering to groundwater flow models, and provides some insight into modelling approaches that might make the filtering more attractive for use in groundwater flow modelling.
