The paper revisits the question of risk and its consequences, and argues that the presumed separability of random events and self protection is problematic for examining issues of endogenous environmental risk. Moreover, by adopting the separability restriction, economists may involuntary relegate their expertise to a role that is decidedly passive and subordinate to that of natural scientists in environmental research and policy deliberations.
