The author gives self-contained proofs of some results of \textit{R.~Charney} on normal forms for words in braid groups [Math. Ann. 292, No. 4, 671-684 (1992; Zbl 0736.57001), ibid. 301, No. 2, 307-324 (1995; Zbl 0813.20042)], as well as some new results.
