The authors study a class of algebras which includes the usual Volterra algebras. It is shown that Volterra algebras can be viewed as quotients of some semigroup algebras introduced by \textit{A. C. Baker} and \textit{J. W. Baker} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 2, 651-659 (1970; Zbl 0199.46903)]. The second dual of these algebras is also investigated.
