The authors obtain an infinite family of hyperbolic knots \(K_i\) in a solid torus \(V\) with slopes \(\gamma_i\) on \(\partial N(K_i)\) for which the manifolds obtained from \(V\) by Dehn surgery on \(K_i\) along \(\gamma_i\) contain essential annuli and tori. Then in this family they exhibit a knot with two such surgery slopes whose distance is \(5\).
