The classical mathematical model of growth and competition of microbial populations on a single limiting substrate in continuous culture, also called the chemostat, occupies a central place in ecological modeling. In this paper, the mathematical model of competition between three populations for a single limiting nutrient is stated and our main result on competition is formulated. Following \textit{J. P. Grover} [J. Theor. Biol. 158, 409-428 (1992)], \textit{H. L. Smith} and \textit{P. Waltman} [Competition for a single limiting resource incontinuous culture: The variable-yield model. Georgia Inst. Technol., USA, Res. Rep. No. 121, 1-32 (1993)], a constant-yield model exhibiting the same asymptotic behaviour as the given variable-yield model can be identified. This correspondence is briefly discussed.
