A straightforward application of linear multistep methods to index 2 differential-algebraic equations leads to a convergent numerical scheme only if the method is strictly stable at infinity. This excludes all high-order Adams methods. The present article proposes to consider partitioned multistep methods, i.e., the differential components are discretized by an accurate high-order method, and the algebraic components by a method with good stability properties at infinity. These methods are especially attractive for the simulation of (nonstiff) constrained mechanical systems.
