The paper is concerned with moving grid techniques in the numerical solution of partial differential equations modelling specific units in chemical plants. As an example, a countercurrent heat exchanger, where phase changes may occur in the streams, is investigated. Here, a moving grid is needed to meet moving phase changes. Two alternative regridding techniques are applied and compared: The first uses a fixed grid for one time integration step, with the grid being updated afterwards; the second treats the phase changing points as additional time-dependent variables augmenting the system to be integrated.
