This paper deals with spaces which are not necessarily locally simply connected. For a one-dimensional compact Hausdorff space (such as the Sierpiński gasket), it is shown that the fundamental group embeds in the first Čech homotopy group. More generally, for any space of dimension at most one, the fundamental group embeds in the first Čech homotopy group based on finite open covers.
