Summary: We prove the minimax principle for eigenvalues in spectral gaps introduced in [\textit{M. Griesemer} and \textit{H. Siedentop}, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 60, No. 2, 490--500 (1999; Zbl 0952.47022)] based on an alternative set of hypotheses. In the case of the Dirac operator these new assumptions allow for potentials with Coulomb singularities.
