Closed loop performance monitoring for (slowly varying) linear systems is addressed. The question of whether a deviation from nominal performance is caused by disturbance or by a change in the plant dynamics is approached by introducing a performance measure that enables the application of the standard CUSUM change detector. The risk of false detection of system changes can be quantified. A practical example of a dc motor control system implemented on a digital signal processor hardware is presented.
