Based on a PhD thesis (Columbia University 1997), the present paper analyses the academic, political and social context of the Chinese scientists members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. By means of case studies, statistics, and a first order knowledge of the subject, from 1955 onwards, the author presents a convincing picture of the various problems posed by the election of elite scientific personalities in mainland China.
